The Beginning of the Last

So, I never really thought about these days coming because George and I have kept so busy our entire married lives--seven children in 11 1/2 years, George going to school for his CPA, Masters', and Doctorate in the evenings while working full-time and holding a very busy church job (bishopric) at the same time; me usually home with the kids in the evenings alone; then when our youngest was in first grade, beginning my teaching profession which has continued for nearly 26 years.   I felt sort of this same way when I knew we weren't having any more children, or the time when I drove our last child out to college in Utah--leaving George and me empty nesters.  (I really cried about that one.  I figured my whole existence of being needed was over!)  Then there was the time when I realized all my children had their own homes--happily married, which, in turn, made George and me very happy!  But now, retirement!!!  So many decisions when you say that word!

Well, the beginning of the last of our official working days is now starting.  Last Thursday, I went to the last board meeting where George would have to present the school year budget.  I know how hard he works each year as the money gets tighter--tempers get shorter as everyone wants more money--and George is left to balance everything for the good of everyone:  Employees, Board Members, Parents, and most of all--Students.  Before he began, the Superintendent made notice of this fact--that not only was this going to be George's last budget presentation, but how much the District would miss him when he retires the end of October.

The Superintendent expressing his appreciation for George.  (The box in front has stacks of printed budgets.  Do you see how thick they are?)
George presenting his last budget as the Assistant Superintendent, which he has been for the past 16 years.
Part of the wonderful team who helped put the budget together.
Superintendent Ben Wortham, Deputy Superintendent Denise Adams, and George - Wonderful, great people to work with.

Yes, although we will be closing out this chapter of working and handling our careers, the Lord has always guided us as to what we should do next.  Living with George, as I have, for the past 44 years--I know that what will come next always promises to be an adventure!

It will be very strange and a little sad to not have George around the schools. I always like it when he drops by my classroom during his FIHS visits. It is also nice to know we have him on our sides at those meetings. I know the man he is beyond his career and I know that he treats his work with great reverence and he takes it very seriously.

As for you, Laura, during my time as a teacher, I have said to myself MANY times that if you can do this, then I can do this. You are a great example to me!!

This is the time you have been planning toward and now it is finally here!! You can do anything you want but unfortunately, you leave behind many wonderful friends. Since Larry announced his retirement more than four years ago, he has worked every day since. He found that he loved going to be a judge and he cared about the people he worked with. I know that George feels the same about his co-workers and they surely feel grateful to work with him. Judging from your past, I know both of you will be extraordinarily busy doing great things no matter what you choose to do.!
