Fleming Island Pinewood Derby

We have heard from the Shanghai crew where Tyson won every single race against every single car in the entire Shanghai city (24 million people).  We heard about Ethan winning in the entire Tri-City area with his first place pinewood car.  Now, I need to tell you about the Fleming Island pinewood derby--let's just say it could have been a catastrophe for the Barlow family. 

Even before the boys were seated waiting for the race, Garrett and Isaac were testing out the car on the floor when suddenly, Isaac got so excited that he ran a little too fast and stepped right on Garrett's car!!!  The wheels came off and a big chunk of wood came off.  Amy was beside herself!  Jeff was in school and let's just say, Amy is very creative in many things, but didn't know where to begin to fix the car!  Fortunately, the Cub Scout Leader, Katie Finnelli brought some super glue, glued the wood back on and put a big glob to hold the wheels on.  At least Garrett would have a car to race!

Garrett won a couple of second places, and finally won a first in his heat!  That's all it took for him--he was thrilled.  Thank goodness that little car held together long enough to satisfy a little eight-year-old boy!

Even though Dr. Ryan Perkins moved years ago, he still brings back his own track and helps run the derby.  He's great!

At first, Lola was sitting patiently waiting . . .

She gave her Grandpa a hug . . .

Then she decided to dance in front of us to pass the time . . .

and try Garrett's hat on. 

Soon she was bouncing on our feet . . .

But when it came time for the refreshments, that was the best for her . . .

and definitely for Isaac!

Way to go, Garrett--seen here with the little car that almost wasn't!  We all had a great time at the Fleming Island Pinewood Derby!
