Gaudi's death was so sad. After spending his entire life devoted to his profession (remaining single the entire time), on June 7, 1926, he was taking his daily walk to a church for prayer and confession. Suddenly he was struck by a passing tram and lost consciousness. Through the years, he had gone from a man who dressed in costly suits with well-groomed hair and beard to an older man who dressed in old, worn-out suits with neglected appearance.
After he was struck by the tram, he lost consciousness and with no documents on him and dressed in shabby clothing, he did not receive immediate aid. Eventually a police officer transported him in a taxi to the hospital where he received very minimum care. By the time the chaplain of the Sagrada Familia recognized him on the following day, Gaudi's condition had deteriorated too severely to benefit from additional treatment. So, the brilliant artist/architect who had done so much for the city, died two days later at the age of 73. The people of the city were in shock and gathered to bid farewell to him. He is buried in the crypt inside the church he built--the Sagrada Familia.
On my sister's blog, you will see pictures which will help you understand why this church has taken so long to build and why there is so much more to it than it first appears. Every single part of it is symbolic of Christ's life.
